I built a podcast station that doubles as a stand-up desk, and you can too

What’s been a happy accident in the time of the coronavirus is that the station has doubled as an awesome standup desk.

The new normal. We’re all waist deep in it.

If you’re lucky enough to work from home in your version of the new normal, I want to share with you a quick and easy do-it-yourself project that can help with production, energy, and give you a better presence during those Zoom calls and happy hours.

Earlier this year, I decided to launch (or relaunch if you’re an OG) a podcast. It’s called Dad Stories and it’s part of the work I’ve been doing for years [and have become a bit more committed to this year] at the First Time Father Project. Part of the reason, this passion project podcast has been a while in the making is because I didn’t feel I had an appropriate place in my house to record.

I don’t have a good office area, and even more, it’s tough to get quality sound in even the nicest at-home office setups.

Then, an idea hit me … what if I DIY’d my own podcast “station?” I envisioned a mobile structure that had two requirements:

  1. Offer me the opportunity to record good audio, and
  2. Give me a place to store [read: hide from my toddler] my equipment.

So, here’s what I did:

I grabbed this plastic Sterilite 4-shelf cabinet.
